Non-Newtonian Fluids and Uncontrolled Emission of Toxic Gases: A Major Threat to Worker Safety

This article explores the role of shear-thinning, pseudoplastic non-Newtonian fluids in causation fatal accidents involving hazardous atmospheres. Analysis indicates an appreciable likelihood occurrence structures infrastructure. When subjected to a shear force, such as stirring, stored gas emits from these fluids. Depending on gas, lethal concentrations can develop almost instantaneously. Upon cessation stress, ambient condition restores rapidly. Chemical and physical processes that provide reservoirs for storage gases potentiate anaerobic respiration by microorganisms source some Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) is most toxic followed carbon dioxide (CO2) ammonia (NH3). Very limited methods are available controlling exposure emitted during disturbance Control strategies must accommodate instantaneous high-level emissions. Disturbance under controlled conditions isolates emissions workers possible means minimize risk exposure. Engineering design incorporates suitable control devices into equipment critical success this strategy.
